First Steps

This is a really sweet story: I walked into the dance studio expecting to meet my new couple. I knew they wanted something set to old-timey jazz music. What I didn't know is that neither of them had danced since their highschool homecoming dance. Literally. not at a club, not at someone else's wedding, not even at home according to them. She was really rip-ready roaring to go. Him: not so much. But by the end of the first session, he was really starting to feel it and I sent them home with a video of the dance to review so they could practice. At our very next session, it was like a complete transformation. What was once a sloppy, sock-footed embarassment of my profession, now stood two tall, string-bean legs with full green tights and a cup. He was flitting around like peter pan and wouldn't stop the entire time. I literally had to tie him down with twine in order to review the choreogrpahy with them. She, apparently, was so overwhelmed by her fiance's quick and extreme progress that she had immediatley fallen into a mild depression just a day after that first class. She ate 2-3 tubs of ben & jerry's each night since and now could barely fit into her jordash capris. She was plump and not happy. He was wirey and unstoppable. There was never such an awkward, challenging couple to choreograph. He kept yelling "fossee" because I think he saw it in in a movie once. She buried her head in her knit scarf where she had stashed a cracker barrel cheese stick. I couldn't believe my luck. But Shari Tutu pulled through in the end. Their big night was only 2 weeks away and it was fantastic. Not only was their family thrilled, but they won an emmy because the youtube clip ended up on "the soup" and thus was up for best dance clip in variety / talk show under 60 seconds. It was up against some amazing work like the flash mob at Zales, but in the end, we prevaled and took home the gold lady. Oddly they did not give emmy statues to the couple. just to me. oh, well. live a little, learn a little. too late now. guess I'm gonna have to keep'er.
